FAITH AND THE PROMISES OF GOD By Ellis W. Short
Faith, when understood and applied according to scriptural principles, is a powerful force. According to Jesus Christ, it can literally move mountains—and it can stop the mouths of lions. Through faith a nation passed through the sea as by dry land and a man called Peter walked on the surface of water. By faith the walls of a great city came crumbling down. Faith has quenched the violence of fire and the dead have been raised. Faith has also provided the necessary courage for some to lay down their lives for the sake of truth. Others were willing to be tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might accept a better resurrection. Others were willing to be imprisoned. Faith, as we know it in today’s religious climate however, is mistakenly misunderstood as a kind of mind-over-matter spiritual control of heavenly powers—a supernatural arm-twisting. It has become a way to get what we want without regard to what God wants of us—or for us. Faith-based, or Word of Faith (so-called) ministries abound and exponents of "exercising" faith are numerous. Religious frauds are multiplying by the dozens on television and by the thousands on the Internet. It is generally taught and believed that anyone, regardless of his or her lifestyle, can exercise faith and thereby lay claim to the promises of Scripture. When this fails to materialize, as it often does, Christians have become discouraged and disillusioned—some even giving up on God altogether. But the faithfulness of God—or the certainty of God’s promises—is not the problem. The problem may lie our own understanding of God’s holiness and his requirements for receiving those promises. God is faithful to fulfill his word. God cannot lie, nor does he exaggerate. With all the talk and preaching about faith—and there will be more as the end draws near—real faith is becoming almost extinct. Jesus said, “…when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?” Many sincere believers long to have more faith. And not all of them desire it in order to make a show or a name for themselves. Their reason for wanting faith is to glorify the God of their salvation, knowing it is the only way to be pleasing to him. In order to know God in fullness, we need to experience his promises. There is a way. And by walking in that way, his promises—even the ones hat would seem impossible—become altogether possible. As you read these few pages, may God become more real to you—may your faith truly manifest itself— and may our Christianity become more real to him.
